International Breast Cancer Awareness Day – Interesting facts

October 19 marks International Breast Cancer Awareness Day, a time to reflect on the importance of prevention, early diagnosis, and support throughout the journey of battling this disease. While breast cancer is one of the most studied cancers, there are still many intriguing facts that remain lesser known, which can help us better understand its impact.

It can affect young women

Although breast cancer is often associated with older women, it’s crucial to understand that it can also occur in younger women, even in their twenties or thirties. While the likelihood increases with age, around 7% of cases are diagnosed in women under 40. This highlights the importance of being aware of any breast changes or lumps, regardless of age.

It doesn’t only affect women

Though rare, breast cancer can also affect men, accounting for less than 1% of all cases. Due to its rarity, it is often diagnosed at later stages since men are less likely to associate changes in their chest area with breast cancer. Awareness campaigns must also include men to promote early detection.

Lifestyle and modifiable risk factors

Lifestyle plays a significant role in breast cancer risk. Factors such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, obesity, and physical inactivity can increase the chances of developing the disease. On the other hand, regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and following a balanced diet can significantly reduce the risk.

Not all lumps are cancer

It’s important to note that not all breast lumps are malignant. In many cases, they turn out to be cysts or fibroadenomas, which are benign. However, it is always essential to consult a specialist if you notice any abnormalities to rule out serious issues.

Advances in treatment have improved survival rates

Thanks to research and medical advancements, breast cancer survival rates have significantly improved in recent years. Early detection and personalized treatments have enabled most people diagnosed with breast cancer to enjoy better quality of life and a more positive prognosis.
